More detail

The existing Cambridge Fire Station was constructed in 1974 and has had several renovations since then to accommodate the growing Department and surrounding community. The facility is located on small, sloping site, with minimal space for expansion. In addition, the current organization of spaces within the facility has made it difficult to provide safe and efficient fire services to the community.

In 2019, the City hired Mull & Weithman to provide a feasibility study for the Department including a facility assessment of the existing Station, programming for the current and anticipated needs of the Department and an estimate of cost for the renovation of the existing facility. The study also took into consideration the history of the Fire Department by exploring ways to display the Department’s historic apparatus and architectural features from the original, early 1900’s station.

The resulting Station included reuse of the existing 1974 facility, with over 10,000 square feet of additions that extended the station out and down into the sloping site to provide the Department with space for current and future growth as well as provide several training opportunities. The design also maintains a connection to the past with the historic steam apparatus display enclosure at the public entry.
